There's a malaise in our society. Something has gone very, very wrong. People are craving mentorship, professional nurturing, a sense that someone's got their back. And increasingly, that someone is a…

I attended a local meetup here in the Portland area, uh, a bunch of creatives getting together to feel a sense of camaraderie, uh, snack on some nice food, uh, enjoy the views from an excellent co-working space, uh, several stories up near the downtown area.

Uh, but the funny thing is, uh, everyone was going around kind of introducing themselves and a little bit about what they do creatively.

Uh, and I mentioned that I run this show, that I host Vibe Coded, and it was named ironically, yada, yada.

And then a little bit later on, another gentleman in the group mentioned that, uh, one of his recent projects he was working on was that he had vibe coded a personal software project.

Um, so later on, as folks were sort of milling around, uh, I went up to the fellow and said, "Oh, I hope I didn't [chuckles] make you feel uncomfortable with, uh, what I was saying about my show, uh, 'cause of what you were talking about with your project." And he was very nice.

He's like, "Oh, no, it's fine." Uh, and then he, you know, was quick to express how, you know, he has some concerns about AI and all that kind of thing.

Um, but we kept talking, and, uh, he ended up sharing more about, um, why he was excited about AI, uh, even going so far as to say that ChatGPT, he feels, has changed his life for the better.

I didn't immediately, like, yell at him or [chuckles] do anything, uh, socially absurd.

He knew where I stood on, on the topic, but, uh, but he, he was expressing his views.

And I thought this particular aspect of the conversation warranted some commentary from me because, uh, he said that ChatGPT has changed his life for the better because...

And he gave a specific reason, and it was a reason I could understand and sympathize with, but it also makes me sad that we are at this state in our society.

And the reason he gave was that he said that he hasn't received much mentorship in his life.

I would, I would guess maybe either late 20s or early 30s, so a, a bit younger than me.

Um, but he was saying he's, he's felt like for a lot of his life he hasn't received much in the way of, of real mentorship or, or support in, I don't know, personal growth or learning new things or be- or being creative, feeling creative, whatever.

So, uh, so using ChatGPT to him has sort of unlocked this world of, of feeling like he can be more creative and he can learn new things and, you know, any sort of questions he has about things in the world that he wants to know more about, he has this sort of, you know...

He didn't use this particular term, but you know, in my mind I'm thinking this sort of magical all-knowing assistant who's always there to help you.
