**Wisconsin's duck opener belonged to the wood ducks.** In this week's Migration Report, hunters from Northwest, Northeast, Southwest and Southeast Wisconsin break down opening weekend: woodie…
We're gonna start in the northeast, right, where our contributors, contributors noted that it was a cold week.
We had temps, uh, with frost or near frost, um, most mornings, so temps were in the 30s obviously.
Big thing here, right? Wood ducks in the northeast, um, area were strong.
Uh, very, very strong, um, likely due to a large acorn crop, which our contributors noted.
Teal really hit and miss.
Um, seems to be less teal around than last year.
Uh, mallards decent in spots.
Again, it's really hit and miss, um, but generally light overall is what our contributors noted.
Geese, they seem to be showing up more and more.
They are building in the northeast.
Big thing here, big, big story from the northeast though is water.
Uh, we have some flowages that are below their summer levels, uh, which did cause some access problems.
Uh, marshes, marshes seem to be drier than last year.
Uh, one really interesting tidbit is that there seem to be a lot of mergansers being shot on the Wolf River, uh, which is probably the most, uh, notable takeaway from, um, all the contributors that, that sent in reports from the northeast.
Now, if we swing west and head over toward the northwest, uh, we have contributors that noted cooler than a cooler than usual, uh, weekend this past weekend.
So we had temps in the 40s both Saturday and Sunday.
Wood ducks were the main show.
There were a few flocks of teal and mallards, a few gadwall mixed in.
However, our contributors noted, uh, they had a lot of success, um, filling their bags or filling their game straps with wood ducks.
Water levels in the northwest were lower than normal but up from last year.
Uh, pressure was extremely heavy on Saturday, much lighter on Sunday.
Overall, though, um, contributors noted that it did seem down from last year with, uh, fewer people camping along the river, uh, Mississippi, um, or along the Mississippi.
Uh, one thing that stood out, right, wood ducks were the, the, the species that, that folks seem to put on their, uh, their game strap most often, and there seems to be more of them than last year in the northwest, right? Again, another big acorn crop, um, really seemed to be holding, holding woodies around.
