One summer, I got invited to go to a conference in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

The pastor who was talking that first night was talking about this very topic, why the music we listen to really does matter.

Then he shared that we underestimate how much it really does impact our lives.

Many of my friends, Christian friends might I add, including me, rebelled at that thought.

One day while I was jamming out to one of my favorite songs, I began to think about the lyrics that I was singing, the ones I was listening to, and they started to really bother me.

The songs I would listen to repeatedly talked about how numb they felt, how nobody could understand their pain.

And I didn't realize while I was singing along, I was drowning in my own hopelessness.

And other songs that I would listen to, they made toxic relationships sound romantic.

But it wasn't until I started paying attention to the lyrics that I was singing.

that I began to realize that these were some of the things I was having a challenge with in my life.

I had to fight the feelings that if I didn't have a boyfriend, I was nothing.

I was basically rehearsing lies that I had already been believing about myself.
