This week on the U Spray Podcast, Mitch and Toddy discuss the real value of quality painting and why painters need to look beyond price when building a successful business. From choosing the right…
So, Tony, what do you think when it comes to first-time sprayers, beginner sprayers, what do you think are some of the common sort of mistakes that beginners make when they start spraying?
Yeah.
I can't speak for everywhere, but in Australia, because there's a lack of knowledge, a lack of expert advice, a lack of experience, I find, and you'll see this whenever you're training, there's usually one or two people that are self-proclaimed experts and come in with a bit of attitude, a bit of confidence, and then two or three minutes into training, they recognize there's definitely opportunities to improve.
And when we go through the basics around tips, for example, it seems basic and it is basic, but it's like, it's such a foreign language to everyone.
And I think, and I would argue that if you've got your tips right, everything else just falls into place.
You know, if you use the right tips, everything lasts longer.
If you use the right tips, less overspray, less masking is required.
If you use the right tips, less guesswork essentially.
And so, you know, and that doesn't, that doesn't just, one of the problems you have is if I went to any, not any, but most, most locations to buy tips and accessories, you'll be left with eight to 10 to 12 available sizes.
And it's like, yes, they're probably That'll probably suffice most scenarios, but it's like quite often the right tip's not there, so you'd be forced into abusing one because you need to get the job done.
And so, which presents other jobs, whether it's going to be tips too big, now you got runs, a tip's too small, now you have a warranty claim because you're not putting it on too good.
So, yeah, I think that would be the biggest thing.
And then also...
The lack of knowledge allows you to be led down a road that not necessarily have to go down.
So, you know, as we spoke about previously about roofs, you know, I have one roof to do, so you have to buy a 695.
Not true.
But it's like now you're out 10 grand.
Or you're, you know, because shops are incentivized on sales.
It's just a unit thing to sell.
and then because there's so much lack of knowledge and ignorance it's kind of hard to pinpoint who's at fault
because
it's like you sold me this well you're a painter you should know better yep arguably well you sold me this well it's like yeah you asked specifically for this I didn't know you were doing commercial work yep why didn't you ask me I didn't know I was supposed to you know it's like all valid points, but the reality is, this is one of the reasons why I suggest people seek out an expert.
There's not very many in Australia.
I could probably name most of them, and it'd be less than 10.
And so it's like, if you don't use those, when I was at Dulux, we did $5 million spray just at Dulux in Queensland alone.
