City Council on Thursday approved a 6.9% increase in San Antonio Water System rates.

The average residential bill will rise by about $3.91 a month beginning in January.

SAWS says the increase will help fund a five-year, $2.6 billion plan to improve water and wastewater infrastructure.

The council approved the increase eight to three after delaying an earlier proposal this summer.

Meanwhile, CPS Energy has put off plans to seek another rate increase from San Antonio City Council.

With San Antonians already facing higher grocery bills and gas prices, CPS Energy says it will hold off on asking customers to pay more for now.

The city-owned utility says it has now deferred two rate reviews and will revisit the need for its next rate increase in mid 2027.

CPS Energy has said rapid population growth, rising energy demand, and aging infrastructure are among the main reasons a rate hike could be needed in the near future.

CPS Energy serves more than 996,000 electric customers and 399,000 natural gas customers.
