The Devaluation of UX Research (Milestones in Dysfunction, Part 4)

I love the discipline.

I know a lot of you out there love the discipline.

The discipline is in a bad position today.

I did a talk in Graz a couple of years ago about this time of the year.

And I talked about how UX is on life support.

There are people out there saying that UX is dead or UX is dying.

No, UX is under assault.

I started saying that UX was under siege in 2011.

People were telling me to shut up.

They said I was crazy for talking about it.

Well, look at what happened.

Was I wrong? Was I crazy? Everything that I talked about that I tried to warn people about in UX has happened.

And a lot of the things that I'm calling out in this sub-series about milestones and dysfunction are being done to help us understand what went wrong.

And it helps us if you're interested, if you're willing to make that effort, if you will, or put the effort in, We can fix the discipline.

And that's what my talk was about in Grots.

I talked about how we need to really subject UX to triage.

There are things that are going on in the discipline that are completely out of order.

They are completely out of whack.

And we can't fix them unless we identify them, which is why I spend so much time identifying things.

Some people try to criticize me sometimes.

You don't have any solutions.

I actually have a lot of solutions and I talk about them.

What you will find is is that when the solutions are presented, the same people who complain do nothing.

Many of them do absolutely nothing.

They're just complaining, many of them, because they're not the person who came up with the idea.
