Why do people attend leadership training, learn all the right principles, and still struggle to put them into practice? Companies invest billions in training, yet knowing what makes a good leader…
David LengyelGuestFaeHostSo you talk about communication as something that drives action, not simply the exchange of information.
What's the biggest communication mistake you've seen leaders and teams making, and why does it have to be such a big effort on performance?

Well, communications is the, the main problem and challenge to begin with, with all teams and the interaction with management.

Um, we hear about it all the time, but the reality is, is that with good, clear communications, nothing else works.

You don't create trust, you don't create alignment on a team, you don't create maximum participation or engagement, you don't create accountability.

So, you know, then the question is, well, what is really good communications? 'Cause we all talk about it, but it's easy to say, but it means so many different things.

First of all, communications is when you're talking with somebody and you're trying to get them to do something, just to drive action.

There's a risk of maybe, uh, losing their job, or the risk of costing money, or the risk of maybe getting hurt.

And so the point is, is if you're gonna ask somebody to do something, you're asking them to take a risk.

And so you need to make sure you give them the information necessary to mitigate the risk, and that is not that simple.

And the reason it's not that simple is because as the communications comes from the manager or the leader, they have a certain level of experience that has probably been whatever it is they're talking about.

Maybe they understand it so well, or they're just saying, "Hey, you know what I mean.

Just take care of it." Or they're really busy, or they're lazy, or they've just got this list of stuff they're trying to get through that day.

But the reality is, if you don't communicate well with somebody, they're gonna, they're gonna make up the space with assumptions, and those assumptions are what create the problems.

Those assumptions a lot of times will go towards the worst case scenario, or they just don't know what to do and so people hesitate because they don't wanna get in trouble, right? And so then it becomes, well, what is good communications? Not real complicated, but it's fairly simple.
