Send us Fan Mail Quitting alcohol can be a miracle and still feel miserable. I’m talking straight today about the gap nobody explains clearly…
And what I am going to talk about is the difference between sobriety and recovery.
If you're in a 12-step program, they say no mind-altering substances from the neck up, which means it's not just alcohol that we're trying to abstain from.
Now, getting sober, if you have been in active addiction, is a tremendous accomplishment.
In the beginning, for many people, there is a real physical dependency far beyond all of the emotional turmoil that we have been numbing.
So I remember in early recovery trying to go to the same places and spaces that I drank at.
Well, that made things really, really hard because I just wanted a goddamn drink.
Part of early sobriety is just committing to abstinence, taking yourself out of the places where you're going to be most triggered and activated.
And when you can make it through a 24-hour period sober when all you've ever known is to drink and use anytime you had any feeling at all, it's a miracle.
