Because if it weren't for him, the fentanyl crisis would not have unfolded in the way it had.
But he wasn't a nefarious individual.
And in the 1960s, it became really an essential surgical drug.
It was an intravenous anesthetic.
It led to this incredibly powerful painkilling action and really high potency, really fast onset, relatively short duration as well.
So people weren't out of it for very long compared to some compounds.
And it became really an essential medicine, and still is today.
Really, really commonly, you go in for surgery, fentanyl's part of the cocktail they give you.
But as we say, there's this legitimate pharmaceutical fentanyl, and this is produced to very high purity, supplied at known doses.
We see a lot less of it in the UK, although, as we recently touched on the EUDA drug report, possibly some signs that it might be emerging as an illicit drug in Europe too.
