My husband was working in the United States when it happened and I was on my own with our two children who were four and six years old at the time.

It was a work opportunity he couldn't really turn down and although we'd discussed me and the children going out to visit him, it never really worked out.

The flights were expensive, the children were in school and I didn't fancy trying to manage the journey with two little ones on my own.

We lived in a rented semi-detached house in a quiet residential area outside Nottingham.

It was an ordinary family house, built sometime in the 1930s with pebble-dashed walls, a small front garden and a longer garden at the back.

The previous owners had modernised the kitchen and bathroom, but the upstairs still had the original wooden floors and a narrow staircase with a polished handrail.

It wasn't perfect but it was warm, the neighbours were friendly enough and the children had a decent sized bedroom overlooking the garden.

My husband and I decorated it ourselves and I'd spent quite a bit of time making it feel like home.

They turned slightly near the top, where the landing was narrow and the ceiling sloped above the final few steps.

There was a small window at the far end of the landing, looking towards the gardens behind the houses.

During the day it let in enough light, but after dark the upstairs landing always seemed dimmer than the rest of the house.

The children shared a bedroom at the front, my room was opposite theirs and the bathroom was between us, a little further down the landing.

It was a straightforward arrangement and we'd settled into a routine long before my husband left.

She was sitting at the kitchen table in her pyjamas, eating cereal and talking about something that had happened at nursery.

Halfway through telling me about a girl who had brought in a new toy, she mentioned that she'd seen an old lady upstairs.

I assumed she meant somebody she'd seen at nursery or perhaps one of the neighbours.
