Jan Westrik went from running a 200-member CrossFit gym to building a premium small-group personal training facility — losing around two-thirds of his existing members during the transition. In this…
Jan WestrickGuestShow HostHostWhat is your role nowadays? What do you do?

I've kind of done that before, but then obviously things don't go as well as you think when you kind of remove yourself, that whole exit and go and sit on a beach that doesn't exist.

I don't think too much for what we do, especially not at that stage that we're at then.
So how do you structure your days? nowadays then because that's a challenge that a lot of gym owners I think in your situation start to have is like well my days are almost like totally unstructured now apart from the occasional sales call so how do you set yourself up to actually show that you're you're moving things forwards?

I try and have a bit of time in the morning, get up, walk the dog, do something active, ride my bike, get in the gym, train, and then have just work blocks.

I'll try and do a bit of, if I'm working on marketing, I have someone in the office three days a week.

nine to five so it's quite nice that i've got someone that i'm working in the office with that kind of you bounce off each other you're not just i'm not just at home in my bedroom trying to crack out certain stuff it's nice to have that certain person i'm probably better with ideas and she's definitely someone who's better with getting stuff done So we kind of work really well like that.

Yeah, it's just kind of making sure that you're being disciplined with your time management.

I've also had a bit of help with that across the years, making sure that this is boxed out.

And one problem is trying to make enough time to do what you want to do, because you can go down some rabbit holes and you can spend a lot of time doing junk work rather than just being effective.

So like I say, rather than just doing the old sales call, make sure you've got time to do things for yourself and block time out to go and do other things rather than just work, work, work.
So if you're looking at the end of this week as an example, is this week a pretty typical work week for you?
success look like? What are some of the things that you would look at from the past week and say, okay, that's been a good, that's been an effective week?

think just making sure that things are moving in the right direction in terms of like things we're focusing on like certain things are marketing is like a always like evolving beast of animal sort of thing so it's not like a write this set and forget and leave it um especially at the minute obviously we would we'll probably touch on it later but making sure that we've got a bit of time now obviously with the time of year and a little bit quieter in the gym so i've got a bit more time to focus on like how are we actually marketing the gym what we're doing for my sales funnels how we how we're structuring things and have another bit of time to kind of sit back assess and then make sure we're ready for things going forward um i kind of have a to-do list that i kind of chuck ideas at and then just make sure that we're just moving in the right direction i'm not letting things get too stagnant um make sure i'm touching base with the team and that's it you don't have to be like perfect i don't think okay
So there's a few overarching pieces there for me that are just good to reinforce.
