So this day was a cold fall morning, and for some reason, I decided I wanted to try my hand at hunting.
Now, I had a shotgun.
It was a .410 .
single shot bolt action.
I still have it.
And I probably was carrying that gun and I was probably, I'm sure I was carrying that gun.
It's the only gun I had.
And so I was, I was thinking about shooting anything that might be shootable with, On a hunt, like if it was a deer, I was going to probably take a shot.
If it was a squirrel, that's really probably what I thought I might have the best chance at shooting.
But anything was fair game.
I'm sure I would have taken a pot shot at a raccoon or a possum, but I didn't have any opportunities.
That morning, in my mind, I was... quietly stalking through the woods like Daniel Boone.
I had some camo on.
I was dressed for the cold morning.
It wasn't freezing, but it was cold enough to where I had a jacket and a hunting vest and at least a hunting shirt on of some kind.
I don't remember owning any camouflage pants, but I probably had a jacket and a hat and those kind of things on.
And I was at least I was going through the woods.
As an adult now, as an old man, I bet I was making all kinds of racket going through those woods and I wasn't about to see anything.
I remember stopping at the bottom of at a very low place between two ridges where there was a drainage ditch and we thought of it as a creek.
And so I was standing on the edge of that creek and there wasn't any water in the bottom of it.
It was very sandy bottom.
And so I found that I could walk a little more quietly in that sandy bottom.
And I remember sitting on a log and looking to the left and right and imagining something coming through those woods and imagining like a really close shot.
I thought I was going to see something.
So every second of that hunt was filled with intense anticipation.
