In this special guest interview, I sit down with fellow dance educator Alice Bruter to discuss the lessons that have shaped her teaching journey. From rediscovering dance after stepping away from it…
Alice BruterGuestReedHostSo what has been the greatest, um, your favorite part...
Well, two-part question.
Your favorite part of teaching and your greatest challenge.

So my favorite part, um, has probably been thinking about how I can make the space feel the best that I can to those, to, to my students.

Like when I think about myself being in class, it's become a very safe space for me.
Mm-hmm.

And just very like emotionally releasing and I feel like I can just be myself in those classes.

Um, so I've really thought a lot about how I can bring that, um, to a room, which I think sometimes is hard.

Um, and also the fact that I'm subbing primarily instead of being consistently in the same room every single week, that's made it a little bit harder.

There's nothing better than like seeing a student who you can just like feel, um, like you can just see their artistry and the fact that they're able to just let go and dance instead of like feeling like they have to be perfect every single step or, you know.
Absolutely.

And even though I don't see the same students every single week, um, I s- I still enjoy watching students just dance.
Yeah.

Well, okay, so I always joke that there's no textbook that you can read before you start teaching.
Right?
Exactly.

Um, 'cause I also don't think there's just one size fits, you know, one size fits all answer.
Mm-hmm.
