Regular listeners will know that the whole subject of learning and development is one that's very, very close to my heart.

But it's also an absolutely essential part of my advisory practice now as I work as a non-exec and board advisor.

I would like to start with some of the most common mistakes that we observe when thinking about learning and development in the recruitment sector.

The leaders and managers, when they think about L&D, I think the biggest mistake is they think it's easy.

They think it's just going to be potentially a refresher or a quick fix for someone.

Or, okay, we've got this issue, so let's throw some of this at it and that will resolve it without really having much thought is what I see.

So the second mistake that links to that is they don't do the training needs analysis.

So if we took BD, because this has been a big issue for two or three years now that we've been focusing on, people think we need more sales.

It might be a skills and we need to hone their skills on that, but it could be a knowledge.

was it part of the onboarding program that they actually understand how you want them to do BD? But a lot of the time we see at the moment as well, it's a motivational, it's an attitudinal problem.
