Sometime in March of the year AD 415, a prominent Alexandrian woman was intercepted while traveling through the city.
She was pulled out of her carriage, taken to a major church, stripped naked, and killed.
She was not just some random victim, but was in fact one of the best known teachers in Alexandria.
She was a philosopher, a mathematician, an astronomer, an editor, an advisor to the leading magistrates of the city, and a patroness with access to power.
Today we're going to begin a short series on Hypatia of Alexandria, the city she lived in, her life, and her death.
It tells us a lot about the late Roman Empire, issues with religion, social order, philosophy, urbanization.
So we're going to take a few episodes to dissect all of this, and this is the first.
