Maybe you picture a 25-year-old fitness influencer taking shirtless selfies in a gym mirror.
Maybe you picture giant biceps, six-pack abs of people who spend entirely too much time talking about protein powder.
For most of my life, that's how muscle was presented to us, as something cosmetic, something optional, something nice to have if you wanted to look good at the beach, something that mattered to athletes, bodybuilders, and fitness fanatics.
The problem is that this may be one of the most dangerous misconceptions in all of health and fitness, because muscle is not cosmetic tissue.
In fact, I would argue that one of the greatest mistakes people make as they age is becoming obsessed with losing fat while completely ignoring muscle.
Your strength, mobility, energy, metabolism, balance, independence, resilience, quality of life, longevity.
And as we pointed out earlier, muscle is one of the best weapons you have for torching excess body fat.
In other words, many of the things people actually want have far more to do with muscle than with weight.
That's a pretty important realization because if your goal is simply to become lighter, you may end up losing the very thing that helps you age well.
