Moving Past the Fear of Judgment: Gym Anxiety, Alcohol Boundaries and Backing Yourself In this Fit & Unfiltered episode, I talk about how fear of other people’s judgement can hold us back from going…
Nicola GrahamHost
The two conversations that I've had this week, I'll speak on these briefly because genuinely think that these two examples are classic and so some of you listening will be like, "Yeah, that is also me.

That is also what I'm struggling with." First, a client who has had a gorgeous summer away.

She's just been training from home, getting her steps, going on nice big hikes and she was like, "I've got the fear.

I've got the fear going into the gym and so is it okay if we start with home workouts?" And I was like, "Uh..." Sorry, if you're watching this, if you're watching this on YouTube, you might be thinking that face Nic is not very supportive because I...

The, the face I've just pulled, I was taken aback when she put this 'cause I'm like this woman is capable and confident.

I said, "What, what are your worries about? That you've lost your strength? Give me a little bit more context." Because we know for her, for her specific goals and for the way in which she usually trains, it's gonna be super beneficial to get back to the gym and not drag it out.

I'm here to support you and give you the plan and all the other good things, but I'm also gonna hold you to that standard that we spoke about when you told me what your goal was.

We're gonna get you to that goal and you can't keep talking yourself out of it.

I'm questioning myself a little bit." And I was like, "Okay, so we're worrying that other people are gonna think that they haven't seen you for a while or maybe, like, new faces in the gym might just be looking and thinking, 'God, what's she doing in here?' Like, whatever it is, whatever the story you've told yourself." And she was like, "Yeah, I know that sounds mad." And I was like, "Yeah, it does.

You've almost got lost in this story that you've started to tell yourself in your mind about what's actually gonna happen when you go in the gym, which is you're gonna go in and no one's gonna be looking at you.

And the familiar faces that you do know will be pleased to see you the way that we all are in the gym because..." Remember this, ladies, if you're new to starting your gym fitness journey in September, some of you are, some of you are returning back after the summer, gym anxiety is a real thing and I know it is because if I go into a new gym I also get it.

I will push myself through the door because I've built this, just do it and feel the fear anyway.
