I think it was probably about eight years ago, Larry and I here were actually having a pint, and he brought this idea to me that it might make sense to enshrine workers' rights in the Vermont Constitution, the right to form a union, the right to sit across the table from your employer and have collective bargaining.
So we looked at this, and Illinois passed a similar measure in 2022, And we've seen this sort of war against workers, a coordinated effort by corporations, ideological politicians across the country.
Scott Walker is one that comes to mind in 2011 who really broke the backs of public sector unions in Wisconsin.
We haven't seen the type of bills – introduced that you see in other states but you know something that people have fought and died for uh... over the decades here in vermont you know talking nineteen thirteen strikes and barry at the quarries there this shouldn't be something that's subject to the political winds of one election You might throw out a group of politicians for one issue, but hold on to your hat.
So something like workers' rights, which are very mature laws in the Vermont statutes, we believe should be enshrined in the Constitution.
But this passed unanimously in the Vermont Senate for two consecutive bienniums and with all but 15 votes on the House floor this last year.
So we're really excited about the bi-tri-partisanship nature of this where all parties could come together and agree this is best for the state of Vermont going forward.
