What happens when your presence becomes a question you have to keep answering? In this episode of *The Modern Migrant*, Katrina explores the **Belonging Audit,** the repeated demand to explain where…
Now, there are people who belong by default.
They are never asked to account for their presence.
They don't rehearse an answer to, where are you from? The belonging is simply assumed, invisible even to themselves.
And then there are those of you, of us, who whose presence is treated as a question.
Not a person, a question.
One that requires an answer repeatedly.
Here is what I want you to notice.
The person asking where are you really from is never asked it back.
One of us gets to belong without explanation.
The other has to produce documentation.
And that word really is the tale.
Curiosity can be satisfied.
You answer the person's notes.
They know you a little bit better.
But really, has already decided your answer is a cover story.
It relocates your truth out of your own mouth and into their suspicion.
You are no longer the author of where you're from.
They are.
And there is a sharper version of this, one we are going to name directly.
Because for some of us, the difference is read out on the body before we've said a single word.
If your skin, your features, your hair are taking on sight as a sign of being not from heren, You can be born in this country, raised in it, schooled in it, belong to it by every fact of your life, and still the question comes.
No, but where are you really from? For you, being born here isn't even accepted as an answer.
Your birth certificate loses to your faith.
The audit doesn't just overlook your belonging.
It overrules your birthright.
