Aretha's journey through life, marriage, and mental health struggles, and the impact of cultural transitions on her and her children. Her decision to end her marriage and the challenges she faced…
wow okay so one of the things that um we spoke about before that really had an impact on your mental health was the ending of your marriage would you say that that environment may have had a contributory factor to it Because like you said, you're in a way you're isolated as a family unit in some ways.
So, yes, in that you don't have the connections and you don't have the support.
But at the same time, it makes me wonder if we did, would it have just been like a bit of a band-aid or would it have been true and lasting
Because, you know, some of the issues were... more about being you know whether it's honesty and just the real things that i think make a good marriage good
don't want to pretend marriage if i'm in a marriage i want to be properly in it um and that commitment etc should be real um and not held up by even if it's you're in a strong um support system or whatever but you
don't think that the strain that there was a strain of the environment that you were living in that put a strain on your marriage in any way that could have had any...
I mean, from my perspective, perhaps, because it was affecting me, maybe not as much as it was affecting my ex-husband, perhaps.
So I have to leave space for that being something that... has to be a factor because it was affecting my children therefore it was affecting me and if it was affecting me it must have affected um their dad as well
And just listening to you talk about it, because I understand it quite well.
