He was about nine and a half, ten and he was at a back to school picnic and I was basically back to school myself and they called me and said that he had a grand mal seizure outside and that they were taking him to the hospital.
After an EEG and other things that we did, he was diagnosed pretty quickly with epilepsy.
And then once again, it's like, you know, it's you take one step forward and two steps back.

Hi everybody, I'm Dr. Nancy Massara and I am the host of the KCNA2 and other rare epilepsy podcast.
She taught in the Virginia school system, middle school through eighth grade for many, many years.
Not only is Colleen a teacher who was teaching in an inclusive classroom, so she became very familiar with disability, but she had her own son eventually when she had children later on.
So what we'd like to do today is talk to Colleen about her experiences, what she learned in and out of the classroom, and some of the things she can share with our listening audience that will help them today.
