Humana said Wednesday that it will exit more Medicare Advantage markets in the 2027 plan year as it deals with high costs and narrow profit margins.
The company's CFO, Celeste Millay, said in a second quarter earnings call with investors that it will shed plans with lower capital returns.
The exits are expected to impact roughly 600,000 MA members, but the health insurer says it expects to recapture around 40% of those impacted through different plans.
Even as it scales back its plan offerings, the health insurer reported approximately 25% growth in individual Medicare Advantage membership for 2026 compared with last year.
This is not the first time in recent years that Humana has announced it would scale back its MA plan offerings.
In 2025, it shed around half a million members when it dropped unprofitable plans and counties.
And for the 2026 plan year, it said its plans would only be offered in 46 states, covering 85% of counties.
Humana is the second largest Medicare Advantage carrier by market share in the country behind UnitedHealthcare.
It announced it would prioritize its MA business after 2023 when it announced in February that it would exit the commercial insurance market.
