And part of my job is to find sources, including in places that we can't get to ourselves, like the Gaza Strip.
I came across Mahmoud when I was looking into the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip.
And there I saw these pictures of this young man, probably in his 30s.
He was super determined and he was staring in these enormous pots with giant ladles.
And, well, that was Mahmood.
So on November 30th, 2024, Mahmoud and his wife took a fateful decision and they said, we can't stay here any longer.
We have to flee.
We have to leave Bethlehem, the town in the north of the Gaza Strip where they were living.
And later that day, I received a message from somebody in the Gaza Strip telling me that Mahmoud was dead, that he had just been killed.
And later I was sent a video from the aftermath of Mahmoud's death, and it shows a group of people standing in the middle of the street right where it had happened, and there's gunfire you can hear in the background.
The news of Mahmoud's death affected me.
We had been corresponding for eight months, and then he was dead out of the sudden.
Had he been in the wrong place at the wrong time? Or had he been targeted? Had he been killed deliberately? Was it a mistake, an error of some kind? That's what I wanted to find out.
