Jesus asks “Who do you say I am?” In this week’s bible reading. Peter answers, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus tells Peter he is blessed for saying this and tells Peter that he did not know this from his own understanding but it was revealed to him by the Father. There are some difficult teachings in this passage that churches interpret differently. Some common beliefs though are that Jesus builds the church. Also he gives the church the responsibility and authority to decide what behavior is allowed and disallowed. Then he tells his disciples not to tell anyone (yet) that he is the Messiah. How about you? Who do you say Jesus is? There are many different beliefs about Jesus. Do you believe he is the Savior of your soul and that he is the Son of God? This weekly podcast is for listeners who want to learn about the bible in easy to understand English. It follows a three year cycle that is used by many churches. I hope that it is helpful for you. God bless you! David

Peter Identifies Jesus1:08 – 4:15

1:08

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, who do people say the Son of Man is? So Jesus is asking them, who do people say that I am? Who are people saying that Jesus is? He calls himself here the Son of Man.

1:35

Verse 14, they replied, some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.

1:50

Okay, so people say many things about Jesus.

1:53

they all seem to think that he's a prophet who has come back.

1:59

Whether it be John the Baptist, Elijah, or Jeremiah, they know that Jesus has done miracles.

2:07

He's done great things.

2:10

He has a great message.

2:12

And so they think he's some kind of prophet.

2:17

And then verse 15 says, But what about you, he asked, who do you say I am? So Jesus is asking his disciples, what about you? What do you think? Who do you think I am? Verse 16, Simon Peter answered, you are the Messiah, the son of the living God.

2:49

So Peter here doesn't just say that Jesus is a prophet.

2:53

He says that he's the promised one.

2:56

He is the Messiah, the one that would save them.

3:02

The one who would save the people.

3:05

The Messiah, the son of the living God.

3:08

He's not just a Messiah, but he's the son of God.

3:16

So this is a very big difference from what other people are saying.

3:20

How does Jesus respond? Jesus replied, What is Jesus saying about not revealed to you by flesh and blood? What is he saying about that? He means by saying flesh and blood, he means you did not learn this by your own wisdom.

3:54

You did not use your own reasoning.

3:57

You didn't figure it out by yourself.

4:00

God helped you.

4:03

God helped you to come to understand who I am.

4:06

This is revealed to you, Peter, by God.

4:12

So he says to him, but by my father in heaven.
