The Cattle Market Guys Podcast

A major New Mexico livestock port is reopening next week after zero new screwworm cases were detected, and it's already sending shockwaves through cattle futures. With Santa Teresa handling 43% of all…
Starting with our market snapshot, we've got two weight classes to look at, and there's some real divergence here worth talking about.
For the 500 to 549 weight steers, current price sits at $382.65 per hundred weight, and that's up $12.12 week over week.
But zoom out to the month over month comparison, and we're down $28.91 from where we were back on August 9th.
So we're bouncing off a bottom.
Is that what you're telling me?
That's exactly what the data suggests.
Now for the 600 to 649 weight class, current price is $349.17 per hundred weight, up $9.02 from last week, but down $26.31 month over month.
So both weight classes are seeing this pattern of a nice weekly bounce inside a longer monthly decline.
The forecast models have the 500 weights hitting $399.56 next week, then settling back to $372.09 by the four-week mark.
The 600 weights look more stable, forecast at $348.47 next week and $347.89 in four weeks.
Well, that lighter end sure looks like it's got more room to fall once that bounce wears off.
That's a fair read.
And this ties right into what we're seeing in the futures market this week, which has been genuinely choppy.
The cattle site reported futures climbing to one month highs on Wednesday, then easing off those highs Thursday.
We'll get into that port story in our next segment because it's a big one.
But for now, just know that volume across both weight classes has been average, nothing unusual there.
So this isn't a liquidity story.
This is a genuine price discovery story playing out in real time.
Sounds like the market just can't make up its mind.
Ah, fair enough.
