Well, hockey fans, Austin here with a little news update regarding your Edmonton Oilers.
The other day, the Oilers signed recently acquired defenseman Shakir Makhmadoulin to a contract extension, and now they've also signed Spencer Stastny to a contract extension.
Spencer Stastny was signed yesterday, so we're going to talk about that.
We're going to talk about what that means for this defensive core at Edmonton that is now a logjam.
I mean, the Oilers have eight capable National Hockey League defensemen on the main roster, and that doesn't even include players like Alec Regula in the minors who could push for a roster spot as well.
So it does seem like something is going to happen with the team at some point before the season starts.
There's going to have to be some kind of trade made because I don't think you can risk losing a player like Stastny or Muck Medulin or even Ty Emberson on waivers because I just, I mean, you want to get some value for one of them, at least if you do plan on moving any of them.
And the Oilers also signed their recently signed college free agent who they signed in April.
We'll do a quick little scouting report on him.
Dave Hall of Oilers Nation wrote a little article on Owen Michaels when they initially signed him in April, and now he's been signed to an extension.
This is a player that projects to play at Edmonton's bottom six within the next couple of seasons, so we'll see how that all shakes out.
And then yeah, like I said, we're going to talk about the overall look of the Oilers defensive group and see what it means moving forward.
