REBEL RELICS NO 9 THE SIEGE OF CORK

damn i just want to say like I've literally been given the history of Cork since the year Dot, I suppose, since I met you.

We've gone back to the beginning, and now we're finding ourselves at another pivotal point in the history of Cork.

It's an infamous or famous siege of the city.

The siege of Cork in 1690 is important for a number of reasons.

It has a significant impact on the political history of Cork and the wider Battle of the Boyne, etc., but...

For Cork itself, it really did signal the end of medieval Cork.

That the walled city, when the Duke of Marlborough from William and Ike forces rolled his cannon in, the walls, they just basically blew apart.

Couldn't take the barrage.

Now, there had already been movement outside the walls.

They had been trying to develop some of the areas, but that was the end.

The walls came down very quickly after that, and modern Cork kind of took on...

the shape it is.

But there are still some areas of the city where you can actually see remains or experience kind of residues, let's say, of the Siege of Cork.

As I've already mentioned, the main guy involved, he was the Earl of Marlborough at the time.

Very interesting surname.

Churchill was his surname.

Churchill.

Yeah.

But he later became the Duke of Marlborough and Marlborough, Marlborough Street.

Marlborough Street, yeah.

Still

has, that's the echoes of that, you know.

Wow.

There is a site that's still over just off Douglas Street, the Red Abbey.

Apparently there's evidence of cannon in the roof of that abbey.
