From Pastor to FBI Agent: The Power of Empathy in Criminal Investigations

What happens when a pastor trades the pulpit for the FBI—and discovers that the skills used to help people can also uncover the truth behind some of the darkest crimes? In this episode of **Amazing Authorities**, Mitch Carson sits down with **Eric Robinson**, a former FBI agent with 24 years of service, to explore his extraordinary career transition from senior pastor to federal investigator. Eric shares how listening, empathy, and creating a sense of safety helped him connect with victims, witnesses, informants, and suspects in high-stakes investigations. Rather than relying on intimidation, Eric explains how establishing authority while treating people with humanity can lead to more productive conversations. He also discusses the psychological complexities of criminal behavior, the difference between understanding someone’s motivations and excusing their actions, and why genuine commitment matters when it comes to rehabilitation and change. Eric also shares insights from significant investigations, including a Chicago police torture case, a Toledo terrorism investigation, and a murder-for-hire case involving a judge. With his upcoming book, *Irreverent*, he reflects on his years in the FBI and the experiences that shaped his understanding of human behavior. WHAT YOU’LL LEARN: • How skills developed in pastoral ministry—especially **active listening, empathy, and building trust**—can transfer into high-pressure investigative work. • Why establishing authority without bullying can help investigators create productive conversations and encourage people to share information. • How to understand the motivations behind criminal behavior while maintaining accountability and recognizing the difference between explanation and justification. • What high-stakes FBI investigations can teach us about human nature, difficult conversations, personal transformation, and the importance of looking beyond appearances.
