What if the moment you've quietly dreaded for years is actually the one you've spent your whole life training for? Most farming families treat succession like a storm on the horizon — something to…
Here's what I've noticed sitting at hundreds of kitchen tables over the past two decades.
Most farming families didn't stumble into succession unprepared because they didn't care.
You see, most moms and dads I work with either went through a rough succession themselves and are determined not to repeat it, or had a great one and want the same for their kids.
The intention is always there, but intention without a plan is just hope, and hope's not a strategy if you wanna be successful.
But either they're scared of where it might lead, or they've tried a few times and it didn't go well.
Someone said something they couldn't take back, and so the conversation got quietly shelved again and again.
The next generation is wondering if their turn will ever come, and the older generation, well, they're wondering if the kids are actually ever going to be ready, until one day that drift becomes a divide.
Now, some families reach out to me after that moment, and we can still do great work together.
But the ones who get the best results, the ones who called before it got there, I always tell them, "The best time to call was five years ago.
The second best time is now." I know this pattern well, not just because I've sat at hundreds of those kitchen tables, but because I've personally lived it and have also seen it on the other side as a professional advisor.
