Coach Training Chats Race Mindset - cultivating, pre race during the race and post race Cam and Jesse break today's podcast into four oversized pieces: cultivating your mindset during the build up…
Jesse VondracekHostCamHost
Let's talk about what your mindset is as you're setting goals, as you're thinking about how you're going to approach the training and how you're going to like start setting yourself up for success in order to have goals and, um, and have a good mindset for the training to lead into the race.
Yeah.
Yeah, mindset.
I think mindset's one of the most important parts.
I hope you agree with that, Jesse, is, you know, when we talk about mindset, we talk often within sort of my world of like a growth mindset is what we're kind of aiming for over what in science is called a stir mindset, which is like a very set, closed mindset, and growth being very open, wanting to develop and get everything moving forward.
It's a lot about being positive and taking things that don't go quite right as being part of the process and trying to shift those into moving forward properly.
Would you agree?

So like if you have a growth mindset, then, you know, you know, there's going to be obstacles along the way.

But that doesn't mean that you still can't achieve whatever your ultimate goal is.

Like that, that we've all seen that graphic of the linear line every coach and athlete want to get to the shiny goal.

But, but we know that that is actually not the path that takes and then you see the big swiggly line that has all the, the obstacles that bring you down and then when things go right you kind of go way above the line, and like that is the path right and you have to be willing to endure that and and not let any of those low points actually tear you down so much.

And I think that's where like the next piece comes in is that that positive self-talk, it allows you to kind of overcome those things, those obstacles that you know are coming, right? And not tying your self-worth to any one obstacle that gets in your way.
Oh, absolutely, absolutely.
Positive self-talk is one of the most underrated things we have.
I mean, we all experience those athletes who kind of, oh, it was so bad, oh, it was really, really bad.
And it's like, why? You know, there were really positive things in there.
There's part of the process is trying to learn what isn't working, what is working, and how we can move forward.
Just throwing, you know, the old adage, throwing the baby out with the bathwater doesn't help us if you just say everything's bad.
You know, there's always some positives in there.
And that's, I suppose, really staying within the process and saying, okay, there's going to be setbacks, but how do we move forward and try and accomplish those small parts and move forward? Yeah.
And within training, it's been shown that dopamine, which is the happy mental drug, helps endurance sport perform better.
