**What is an overview of systematic reviews?** In this episode, Lise Estcourt talks to Susan Brunskill about the process of conducting an overview of systematic reviews. They discuss why overviews…
And first of all, I wonder if you would be able to explain what is an overview.
An overview uses explicit and systematic methods to search for and identify multiple systematic reviews on related research questions in the same topic area, and they aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the evidence available.
And I'll, um, focus on explaining in relation to Cochrane overviews, so those are all focused on healthcare interventions and comparisons.
So Cochrane overviews are typically conducted to answer questions related to the preventional treatment of various disorders, s- usually healthcare interventions.
And there are five main reasons why people do a Cochrane overview, and they can assess different aspects.
So, one is looking at different interventions for the same condition or population.
So, looking at pain management for women in labor is an example of a Cochrane overview.
Secondly, it could look at different approaches to applying the same intervention for the same condition or population.
So here, an example is assessing sumatriptan, uh, for acute migraine attacks in adults and looking at all the different routes of administration in different reviews.
Thirdly, it could be looking at the same intervention for different conditions or populations.
So here, an example is interventions to improve safe and effective medicine use by consumers.
Fourthly, it could be adverse effects of an intervention for one or more conditions or populations.
And finally, assessing the same intervention for the same condition or population, where different outcomes or time per- points are addressed in different systematic reviews.
An example here is the review that we've conducted, where it's looking at red cell transfusion to treat or prevent different conditions associated with sickle cell disease.
The key difference is that we're l- using the systematic review as the unit of searching, inclusion, and data analysis rather than the original trial.
And they generally address research questions that are broader in scope than those examined in individual systematic reviews.
