This is Part 1 of our four-part September series. We’re breaking down elk season week by week so you can hunt the week you’re actually in....not the week you saw on YouTube. Week 1 is September 1–7…
Okay, so what are the big things that you've learned? What are the big things that you're most excited about? Obviously, we're trying to teach everyone about the first week of September, discussing that.
So give me your theories, your pros, your cons, all your above.
Yeah, I think that first week, I'm just thinking from our experience last year, first day we went back to the area we had hunted the year prior.
So that first day, it was September 5th last year because we went out on Friday.
We didn't go on opening day.
We went out to an old bull's bedroom we knew from the year prior and immediately we We identified there were hunters in the area.
So, you know, it was going into an area and maybe someone else e-scouted it or scouted it and thought it might be a good spot.
And so now, even though we did some scouting, we had experience in that area.
Now things have changed.
So that first day, it's how many other people had the same bright idea as you.
We're trendsetters, okay? That's what we're going for.
And so, yeah, I think in that first weekend, we're also looking at the calling.
I mean, they're not rutting.
They're not bugling at that point.
So cow calls are important.
We did find, I think that first day last year, at the end of the day, I wrote down in my notes, we need to call more.
I think it was something we were just like, do we call? When do we call? We're still kind of learning when are good times to call? How much should we call? How much is too much? And then we ran into hearing other hunters bugling.
And we were like, I don't think that's an elk.
Elk aren't bugling right now.
And so that was, OK, there's hunters here.
We had received a few bugles from them.
We bugled back at them.
They bugled at us.
And it just it wasn't a bull.
The time of day just didn't add up.
