If I wanted to control another human being, I could certainly try to control their actions.

I could tell them what to wear, where to go, who they can spend time with, or how they should behave.

But that actually is an inefficient form of control if you think about it, because it requires constant effort.

But if I can control your mind instead, if I can influence the way you think, then eventually you begin controlling yourself on my behalf.

You begin anticipating my reactions and adjusting your behavior without me even asking.

I want you to think back to the beginning of your relationship because chances are the narcissist wasn't openly trying to dominate your thoughts from day one.

They wanted to know everything about you, your dreams, your fears, your childhood, your insecurities, your hopes for the future.

But looking back, most survivors eventually realize something much more unsettling.

They were gathering information they could later use to influence, manipulate, and control you more effectively.

One of the things I learned over the years is that narcissists are remarkable students of human psychology, not because they necessarily understand psychology academically, but because they've spent a lifetime Learning how people work.
