Move Better, Hurt Less with Dave Jeter

In this practical episode of the SuperSelf Podcast Series, Pete Ferrari sits down with physical therapist Dave Jeter, founder of Acceleration Physical Therapy, to talk about why pain should not automatically mean injections, MRIs, surgery, or giving up the activities you love. With more than 25 years of experience in physical therapy, Dave takes a different approach: look beyond the painful structure and figure out why that area is being overloaded in the first place. Together, Pete and Dave break down why shoulder pain may actually be connected to stiffness in the neck, upper back, shoulder blade, or collarbone, why low back pain may be driven by poor movement in the hips and pelvis, and why simply treating the body part that hurts can miss the bigger problem entirely. Pete also opens up about decades of lifting, running, cortisone injections, shoulder damage, and the consequences of pushing through pain without proper rehab. Dave explains why mobility can be even more important than strength for already-active people and why the best physical therapy combines hands-on manual work with progressive exercise. From cortisone and PRP to stem cells, strength training, balance, chronic pain, injury prevention, and healthy aging, this episode is about learning how to work with your body instead of constantly fighting against it. The goal is not simply to feel better today. It is to move well enough that you can still walk across the soccer field, play with your grandchildren, exercise, travel, and live independently decades from now. **Episode Highlights:** - 03:00 – The difference between identifying what hurts and understanding why it hurts - 11:08 – Why a physical exam may tell you more than an MRI - 20:42 – The four pillars of musculoskeletal health: flexibility, strength, endurance, and balance - 35:56 – When cortisone may have a useful role in a larger rehab plan - 40:00 –When physical therapy can help you break through a fitness plateau - 55:42 – Why successful rehab may take months rather than days **Key Takeaways:** - Pain is often the symptom, not the whole problem. - An MRI does not always explain your pain. Bodies accumulate wear, old injuries, scar tissue, and structural changes over time. - Physical therapy can often begin earlier than people realize. - Physical therapy should not replace proper medical screening. Some symptoms can indicate a serious condition rather than a musculoskeletal injury. - Strong does not automatically mean healthy. - What you do now determines what you can do ten years from now. - Chronic pain can become a cycle. - Listen when your body changes the message. - Cortisone is a tool, not a cure. - Surgery can be appropriate without being the first answer. - Balance deserves far more attention. Strength alone cannot always prevent injuries. **About the Guest:** Dave Jeter is a physical therapist with more than 25 years of experience and the founder of Acceleration Physical Therapy in Spokane, Washington. His approach combines manual therapy, mobility work, functional exercise, progressive loading, balance, coordination, endurance, and patient education to help people better understand why they hurt and what they can do about it. Rather than focusing only on the painful body part, Dave evaluates how the surrounding joints, muscles, and movement patterns are functioning together and looks for the mechanical reasons a particular structure may be experiencing excessive stress. His goal is not simply to reduce pain temporarily. It is to help people restore movement, build resilience, improve independence, and create a healthier musculoskeletal system for the long term.
