Is nostalgia powering our opinions of games like Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced and Star Fox for Switch 2? Finding reliable games information when companies put their thumb on the scale! Plus, a…
Shane SatterfieldHostWelcome to boss fight this gives me a chance to riff on some of the big topics for the week in the video game industry and this week's Entry is a little bit of a follow-up on last week's boss fight because I'll admit I failed so There was an underlying message I was trying to get through with last week's boss fight, and I'll just say after reading all the comments on the show, you guys didn't get it.
As a person who makes this show and talks about this stuff, that is 100% my fault.
So, I'm talking about something different this week, but it still kind of relates to what I discussed last week with PlayStation eliminating discs and physical media.
So, I, you know, I've been reviewing games, working in the games industry since 1997, coming up on 30 years next year, which is just crazy.
And, you know, over the last 10 years, remasters, remakes, reworks, whatever the hell you want to call them, have become a big, big part of the games industry.
And as somebody who covered and reviewed the original versions of these games, and now... 30 years later, I'm reviewing the remaster and the remakes.
A couple people have mentioned some things about how nostalgia could possibly cloud your opinion on these things.
And to be fair, as somebody who has been working in this industry for three decades at this point, there's probably some truth to it in that I covered this stuff originally.
Now, someone who's 25 and they're reviewing these games, they probably didn't play the original, or if they did, they only went to play it just before they played the new one, so they had a frame of reference.
And so, one could maybe argue that they aren't as tainted towards analyzing that product, and maybe I might be.
So I wanted to kind of dive into that and see if there's any truth to the idea that maybe having more experience might be a bad thing when you're evaluating modern video games.
Now, most people think that video game remakes and remasters are a recent phenomenon.
It's kind of kicked into gear over the last 10 to 15 years, but there have been remakes and remasters forever.
In fact, the game that is credited as being the first ever video game remake or remaster is Midway's Gunfight from 1975.
The PS2 era, things kind of calmed down because it was the advent of 3D and remaking 2D games didn't really make much sense at that point.
