[gentle music] Everywhere Cole went, he took his games controller with him, carrying it in his pocket.
Cole had just got out of the car when his mom's phone rang, which was never a good thing.
"Oh, hi, Janine," she said cheerfully, and delved into an animated chat.
She had to stand still to take a call, which meant Cole had to stand around, too or, as in this case, slump against the side of the car.
It was while he was leaning on the passenger door that he saw a cyclist approaching, pedaling slowly.
He was dressed all in black with dark sunglasses on and his hood up.
Cole didn't think much of it, quickly looking away.
Suddenly, his mom screeched, "My phone! He's got my phone!" The cyclist was now pedaling away across the car park, disappearing among the cars.
The cyclist was now pedaling away, disappearing amongst the cars.
"I'll get it back." From out of his pocket, he pulled his games controller, thumbed a combination of buttons, and suddenly the shopping cart was racing after the stolen phone.
Games controllers control games.
Everyone knows that.
But Cole's, he'd come to realize, could control so much more, like shopping carts, for example.
He kept the cyclist in his sights, following him out of the supermarket parking lot, across the front of a bowling alley, and onto the forecourt of a car wash.
The cyclist disappeared down an alley on the car wash's far side, on the car wash's far side, stopping by some dumpsters.
It was a quiet spot to check what make and model of phone he'd stolen.
