[gentle music] When Lucy and Max went to visit Grandma's house, they always expected something a little unusual.
Sometimes her rocking chair rocked by itself.
Sometimes the curtains twitched when there was no breeze.
And once, Grandma's knitting needles clicked together when nobody was touching them.
But the strangest thing of all was Grandma's cat, at least that's what she said.
"This is Mr. Whiskers," Grandma announced proudly one Saturday morning, patting the air beside her.
"Isn't he handsome?" Lucy and Max exchanged looks.
There was nothing there.
"Grandma," Lucy said carefully, "we don't see a cat." Grandma winked.
"That's because he's invisible." Max laughed.
"Invisible cats aren't real." "Oh, aren't they?" Grandma raised her eyebrow.
Just then, the sofa cushions dipped as if something furry had plopped down on them.
A faint purr rumbled through the room.
Lucy gasped.
"Max, did you hear that?" That night after Grandma tucked them in, the children sneaked downstairs for a midnight snack.
"Shh," whispered Lucy.
"We'll just grab a cookie." They tiptoed into the kitchen, but before they reached the cupboard, they heard it, click, slam, munch, munch, slurp.
The fridge door creaked open by itself.
Sausages floated out in midair one by one and disappeared with noisy chomps.
Max's eyes widened.
"The sausages are, are vanishing." Lucy gulped.
"No, they're being eaten by Mr. Whiskers." Just then, an invisible tail swished across the counter, knocking over the jam jar.
Splat, red goo splattered everywhere.
Grandma bustled in wearing her fluffy slippers.
She sighed.
