What does it truly mean to accept God's invitation? Through Jesus' parable of the wedding feast and the promises of Isaiah 25, this sermon explores God's abundant grace and His desire to make all…
Well, biblical scholar and commentator Klein Snodgrass...
It's an unfortunate name, but who am I to talk? He wrote an 800-page book on the parables of Jesus.
And when he got to the parable of the wedding feast, he said, it's enough to make any interpreter weak in the knees.
I consider it the most difficult parable of all.
Quoting another interpreter who says they felt enough disquiet about it to confess the feeling it should be altogether ignored.
The parable is distinctive and powerful.
It has the surreal quality of a dream or maybe a nightmare.
The logic of this parable is dream logic.
There's clear details and impossibilities.
Somehow the invitations are out and the servants are killed and the king's vengeance.
It all happens while the wedding feast is sitting there already prepared.
It's vivid.
It's shocking.
Diaphanous.
It's unrealistic.
It's unsettling.
And so I'm not going to preach on it.
Lead, you want to take it? No.
Father Doug? No, okay.
