There is a lot of talk about AI alignment, which is getting machines to act in our best interests. But how do we go about doing this? The philosophical secret to this conundrum is values. But how do…
Okay, so by way of introduction, the development of artificial intelligence, as I'm sure you are all aware, is exploding.
We may soon have AIs that are equal to our own human cognitive ability, what is called artificial general intelligence.
Not long after that, we may see the emergence of artificial superintelligence, what is deemed ASI, that could vastly exceed human capabilities.
AI on its current trajectory seems inescapable, and it will be part of the fabric of our lives and revolutionize every field of human endeavor, from science, medicine, and business, to education, entertainment, and more.
Areas long thought to be intractable like the protein folding problem in biochemistry and complex proofs in mathematics have been recently cracked by AI programs.
And the era of quantum computing can have even greater power and promise and might arrive on the scene sooner than we think.
It could help solve climate change, eliminate disease, and extend our lifespans.
Accelerationists are full steam ahead in developing AI and argue that the technologies themselves could actually cure some of the problems that they create.
It might lead to totalitarian control of society, nuclear war, or engineered viral outbreaks.
Decelerationists with these attitudes call for slowing down or even pausing AI development along with more extensive regulation.
So what do values have to do with all of this? They are the key to navigating these futures.
