Truth be told, the first two years, I spent a lot of time fishing with Jason, like I said.
I did every season at least one trip with him, winter, springer, summer steelhead, fall Chinook.
It took me until my third year fishing, which was this season, winter steelhead, to catch my first steelhead on my own.
And I know I had some conversations with you, and I was getting frustrated the amount of time I was putting in, the amount of rivers I was visiting, the amount of techniques I was trying.
I caught my first winter steelhead, and then I think in a short amount of time, I managed to get like 10 more.
Looking at water differently, something just clicked this year and I can't really put a pin on it what it is, but I see it now.
I slow down enough, I look at the water and I just think that's it right there.
And I don't know how to explain it other than reading water and seeing things differently as I think is what the difference is this year, playing with baits and the small details.
That's actually a really good answer because on one hand, even though you mentioned those couple years going to get that first, at the same time, you had had some incredible days fishing with Jason and getting into some awesome fish.
And it's actually really cool that you kind of have this perspective of having epic guided trips and But then also having that challenge of, okay, I want to go and I want to get this done on my own.
And the whole reading water is also interesting in that for me, and I think this is true for a lot of people, whether it's a technique or a fish or a fishery, that you kind of need to get that first fish done.
to start and then subsequent fish to start having these little mental snapshots of like, Ooh, this is a spot it's going to happen.
And many times we're hitting holes and you know, 10 of them, okay, this is the one and it's not.
