This came across my feed, uh, many, many times, and every single time I very promptly scrolled away, 'cause I just really didn't wanna know about it.
But, um, realized that it was very important and that I needed to know.
It is, like, genuinely not surprising, but really devastating at the same time.
And that just goes to show the duality of man.
Because the UN now considers exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius of global warming effectively unavoidable.
Mm.
So a new United Nations environment program report says that on the world's current emission trajectory, the most optimistic realistic outcome is for warming to peak around 1.8 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels this century.
Yeah, 1.5 is off the table.
Um, which is really cool.
Which, really, really cool.
So obviously this doesn't mean that climate-
Mm
... action is pointless, like, that we should just give up.
We're still just focusing on limiting how far temperatures overshoot their initial goal and how long they remain above it, and whether it can be brought back down through emission cuts and carbon removal.
But yeah, every bit matters and, um, a peak of 1.8 degrees would experience a lot less damage than one that peaks at two or 2.5 degrees or even more.
So it's still important to keep that temperature as low as possible.
But yeah, it is kind of crazy that they've admitted that it's not gonna happen.
Yeah.
It's scary and it is very scary.
I mean, like, we kind of already knew for a while.
I mean, you've only got a bit over three years until they were meant to hit that target.
They, they set the target back in 2015, so if we haven't done it now, very, very unlikely that, um, d- we're drastically gonna change things in the next three years.
But it's just, it's just another blow of, like, this is just getting worse and worse.
This is going badly in that, like, we need to shift to preventative measures as well as trying and, like, pleading.
Please just do anything, literally anything to reduce just a fraction of what the temperature's gonna be.
