Sarah Billings is on fire! As we wait for Australia’s 2026 Commonwealth Games team to be announced, the Aussie middle-distance runner is well and truly in the mix for selection. Sarah sits down with…
Sarah BillingsGuestElise BeacomHostYou know more than all of us listening right now for Commonwealth Games team announcements.
We are now, what are we, the 17th? of june and we still haven't got the um teams out so we're guessing there's a bit of stuff going on behind the scenes but yeah just nod or shake your head and it'll just be between us

yeah I think um yeah we we found out a couple of weeks ago now that I did hear that um the team would be announced on Monday so hopefully soon but yeah I won't I won't give anything away I haven't heard anything else of what's been going on but I think there must be stuff happening if it's taken this long
yeah It's a bit more of a complicated one this time too because Australia is taking a smaller team and needing to figure out, you know, almost comparing athletes across events, like even across field events as well as track events.
It's like how do you judge or compare an apple with an orange and say, you know, this person has a better chance of meddling in the 800 versus this person in discus or whatever?

Yeah, yeah, I think it's pretty hard because you're basically fighting for a spot, I guess, not like if an appeal is going down, you're fighting against not necessarily a person in your event group.

So it can be really hard to argue your case because, you know, yeah, exactly like you said, you could be fighting against someone in a completely different event group.

And how do you compare apples and oranges? I think I saw some articles, which I definitely shouldn't have looked at.

But yeah, comparing athletes like myself included to like people from completely different event groups.

But I think this year, like the selection policy was very subjective, I guess.

So I think it would be... pretty hard to argue because yeah, it's just pretty vague and broad.

But in saying that, like as, as an athlete, you basically just have to put, do your best and like the rest is out of your hands.

And yeah, I was talking to a few girls in our training group, like before the team was announced and you know this year is regardless of if you make com games or not it's a great year to just have a free hit out and run as fast as you can because com games is so early in the season compared to world champs last year was right at the end of the season so having the championship sort of I guess essentially in the middle it means that you can keep racing after a you know, try and qualify for next year, try and run PBs, try and, you know, place as highly as you can at diamond leagues.

It's just, it's a year where I think you can still achieve a lot of goals, even if it isn't making the team.

And then if you do make the team, it's amazing because com games is such an incredible team to make.

And, um, Yeah, I haven't been to Comm Games before, so I can't speak on what it's like or anything.
Having Comm Games a bit earlier is much better in that you can still give it a bit of a crack later if you want to.
