How much of the stuff we think is wrong with us is actually just a pattern we've learned along the way? And how much of our life are we spending trying to manage the symptoms instead of figuring out what's actually driving them?
Beck King is a speaker, coach and human behaviour nerd, and this conversation went in some bloody interesting directions.
We get into why knowing what we need to do and actually doing it are two very different things, why we sometimes need a tipping point to finally make a change, and how much of what holds us back is driven by fear, the stories we tell ourselves and the meaning we've attached to things that happened years ago.
Beck shares her own journey through depression, anxiety, grief and a relationship that left her living with a lot of fear. What I found particularly interesting was how she went from believing this was simply who she was to understanding the patterns underneath her behaviour, and how that changed the way she saw herself.
We also get into identity, the power of our language, why the problem we think we're dealing with often isn't the actual problem, and what happens when the people around us aren't necessarily on board with the changes we're trying to make.
And there's a cracking reminder in here that you don't have to wait until you hit rock bottom to do something differently. Sometimes the change starts with getting curious, asking better questions and making a decision.
Because let's be honest, most of us don't need another book, podcast or course telling us what to do (except for this one, of course!!). We probably need to work out why we're not doing the bloody thing in the first place.
If you've ever felt like you're getting in your own way, this one's for you.
