They were trying to engineer an entrance into Blackstaff Tower in an attempt to investigate Calyx Grimwood, a member of the Last Horizon.
With the help of a new pal and Waterdavian socialite, Malefax Duvex, they thought they could trick the tower's magical defenses, but it would require brief access to a magical item owned by someone with legitimate tower access.
That's how they've found themselves here, pretending to be staff at a lavish and scandalous dinner party, full of people who want to do things like kill each other, rob the host, or trade in secrets.

The target is the arcane focus owned by Astra Valeris, a guest at the party in an up-and-coming hotshot in Waterdeep's wizarding circles.
