I Was Right, But It Wasn't Helpful

We talk a lot about honesty here, about being real, about saying the thing that needs to be said.

But what we don't talk about as much is timing, the delivery, the space between truth and kindness.

Because honesty without compassion can land like a verdict.

It can turn into something that feels less supportive and more like a correction.

In that moment, my friend wasn't asking, was this relationship objectively viable? She was sitting in loss, in confusion, and in heartbreak.

And I answered a question she wasn't asking.

So how do we use our mindfulness practice in this situation? One of my teachers taught me there's often a space between what we feel and what we say.

It's subtle, easy to miss, but it's there.

And in that space, we have a choice.

We can react, or we can respond.

Well, I reacted, clearly.

I let my perspective lead instead of my presence.

And later, I circled back, a small and quiet correction.

I'm sorry, I said.

That wasn't what you needed to hear.

I think I was speaking from my own perspective instead of meeting you where you are.

And she nodded, because that's the thing about accountability.

It's not about beating yourself up.

It's about noticing when you've missed the mark and gently adjusting.

Accountability without compassion becomes punishment, not just for others, but for ourselves too.

We either double down on being right or we collapse into guilt.

Neither one is helpful.

The middle path is something softer.

It's being willing to say, I meant what I said, but I wish I had said it differently.

It's recognizing that truth and kindness are not opposites, but they don't always arrive together automatically.
