So, dear friends, this gospel, um, I think decades ago, this gospel would probably have sounded...
It would have suited our, our Irish palate, uh, when it spo- it speaks here of, of poverty and riches.
So it says, the Lord himself says, "I tell you solemnly, it would be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.
It's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven." Now, again, if you're speaking to people who live in relative poverty, that, that's actually a lovely, it's a lovely gospel.
Uh, kind of the flip side of that is now in the Western world, we all live well.
Like, h-how many of us have ever suffered from hunger that wasn't actual fasting? [coughs] We all have three meal, we all eat three meals a day.
Anybody remember the outdoor ones? You know, like we, like we live, we live very, very comfortably.
Like, you'd have to plan for six months in advance and maybe sail across, and it would cost an arm and a leg only.
Do you, uh, uh, I still remember the tail end of flying being for rich people.
You know, like when Ryanair came along and made flight, uh, popular or common for ordinary folk, this was a revolution.
You know, so, so this gospel is, um, it is still relevant to us, but I think we have to unpack it a little and understand what the deeper sense of it is.
