Ironman UK Swim Cancellation3:05 – 7:16

3:05

But before we actually go into the questions, I've got a couple of things I want to talk about.

3:08

Firstly, to anyone who has entered into Ironman UK a couple of weeks ago now, I was absolutely gutted to see what happened with the swim portion being cancelled because of blue-green algae in the water.

3:20

Obviously, really, really difficult for anybody who has trained and prepared for this for a year and maybe dreamt about it for years and years to have the swim pulled at the very last minute.

3:31

It's really, really difficult.

3:32

And I was following along in some of the Facebook groups as people were posting photographs and thinking, man, it's not looking good for the swim, judging by some of the photos that were posted there of the lake.

3:43

It looked really, really green and unpleasant.

3:46

But look, I've been in the sport a long time.

3:49

I've got a lot of friends who are professionals and work in open water swimming.

3:53

And the advice is really clear.

3:55

It can make you really ill swimming in water that's got blue-green algae in.

3:59

And in extreme cases, it can cause death.

4:01

Certainly for smaller animals, if dogs go in where there's blue-green algae, And they swim in there.

4:06

Then they come out and they lick the stuff off the fur.

4:08

It can be fatal to dogs.

4:10

And it can cause really unpleasant rashes on humans.

4:13

It can give ear infections, eye infections.

4:16

It's just not worth the risk.

4:18

And I know I was seeing some people posting in the Ironman UK Facebook group that they'd been in for a swim and it was fine.

4:24

Like, okay, I hope you're okay and I hope you've got away with it.

4:28

But...

4:29

I think the organisers have made the right decision not letting you swim in that water for health and safety reasons.

4:35

I think they could have gone about it a different way and I think more notice could have been given.

4:39

But obviously, I think they're trying to give everybody...

4:42

They're trying to give as much time as possible for this situation to clear.

4:46

I know there's been problems at outlaw events over the previous years and this year as well with the water quality.
