In this episode of Nourished with Dr. Anikó, Dr. Anikó continues her recent focus on the heart with HeartMath, a practice first brought up by acupuncturist Michelle Oravitz in earlier episodes. Before explaining HeartMath itself, she starts with the basics of biofeedback: what it is, how it works, and why it can be so empowering for adults and especially for kids.
Biofeedback pairs simple techniques, like breathwork, visualization, or meditation, with a device that measures what's happening in your body, such as heart rate, breathing rate, blood pressure, sweat, or even brainwaves. Dr. Anikó explains how biofeedback and neurofeedback can help with ADHD, anxiety, headaches, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, IBS, TMJ, high blood pressure, and more. Because it's noninvasive, it can sometimes reduce the need for medication. She also shares a simple experiment to try at home with a heart rate monitor or smartwatch, and how she teaches kids that they have "the magic" to slow their own heartbeat. Seeing the change on a screen helps us learn what calm feels like in our bodies, until eventually we don't need the device at all.
From there, she explains what makes HeartMath different: its focus on emotional shifting. She describes heart rate variability, why a "sinus arrhythmia" reading on an EKG is completely normal, and how stress makes the heart rhythm look jagged and chaotic while HeartMath techniques smooth it into what's called a coherent heart rhythm. She also explains how emotions like appreciation, gratitude, and care can help move the heart into coherence.
Dr. Anikó then teaches several practical techniques: box breathing, which the military and law enforcement use to stay composed under pressure; HeartMath's Quick Coherence technique; heart-focused breathing; and attitude breathing, where you breathe in a replacement for an unwanted feeling, such as calm for anxiety, peace for overwhelm, or compassion for guilt. She adds an important caveat about spiritual bypassing. These tools aren't for avoiding difficult emotions, which always carry information and always pass. Their real power is in shifting the patterns we get stuck in. As she reminds listeners, a pattern of negative or pessimistic thinking isn't your personality. It's something you learned to adapt to your life, and what you learned, you can unlearn.
She closes by connecting HeartMath back to the heart-centered meditation from recent episodes, and by sharing why teaching kids these tools can give them a lifelong sense of agency over how centered, calm, and balanced they feel.
