The number of teenage girls identifying as lesbian or bisexual has plummeted in four years.

This, according to new data highlighted by The Washington Post, revealing a dramatic shift in how young Americans describe their sexual orientation and leaving researchers searching for answers.

The percentage of boys identifying as gay or bisexual has remained largely unchanged over the past decade, while the share of high school girls identifying as lesbian or bisexual surged following the COVID pandemic before beginning to decline, according to The Washington Post.

Although those numbers have continued to fall, rates among older teenage girls have remained relatively steady and are still higher than before the pandemic, the outlet reported.

Jean Twenge, a professor of psychology at San Diego State University who publishes, published rather her analysis of the 2025 data on her substack Generation Tech, told The Washington Post the downward trend began while former President Joe Biden was still in office, casting doubt on whether the shift could be attributed to a change in presidential administration.

Now, I imagine this is in reference to what the left would claim, and that is because they're so scared of Donald Trump, because young people are so scared that MAGA Americans were going to go out in the street and start beating the living daylights out of everyone that they suspected to be gay, that these otherwise lesbian and bisexual girls are hiding who they really are.

And what this professor is noting is, no, no, this this was before Trump got in office when this trend started to plummet.

In a recent post on X about the development, Terry Schilling, president of the American Principles Project, wrote, amazing what happens when you cut the Department of Education and USAID.

The available data also does not explain why such a political transition would affect certain age groups differently, according to The Washington Post.

Walt Heyer, who detransitioned 40 years ago after identifying as a woman for eight years and author of many books, including Trans Life Survivors, cautioned against drawing sweeping conclusions from the findings, telling Fox News Digital that more research is needed before declaring a lasting shift.

Saying it's premature to celebrate this one report as proof of a downward trend, better to be skeptical and conduct more studies before we put the study in the win column.

In which you had young people, particularly girls, that studies have shown proved to be more susceptible to social media trends, were spending a disproportionate amount of time on social media because everything was locked down.

Not only then did you have an increase of exposure to social media influences, but you were at the same time having a vacuum of the real-life social influences of your actual friends.

Now, you, you might communicate with them through text messaging, you might do Zoom calls with them, but it's just not the same a- as spending time with your friends, you know, driving to the mall or going on road trips or, you know, just going to Sonic, whatever it is that, that young girls do together, driving around.
