Nefesh HaChaim | The Soul of Souls | How Adam's Sin Changed All Creation
There's the angels and the upper realms and the upper spheres and the upper dimensions.
Nevertheless, the Almighty decided to endow man with the ability to determine the fate of all of created existence.
Man's actions ripple through all of created existence, and that's why when man is created, the verse describes the creation of man, "God blew into his nostrils the soul of life." "Vayehi ha-adam" and man became "lenefesh chayakh," to the nefesh, to the soul, to the spirit of life.
Now, what does that mean? Just as the soul determines what the body does, the soul is the, the governing architecture, the governing apparatus of the collective of man.
So too, in all of created existence, in all of the worlds, in all of the realms, in all of the universes, in all of the dimensions, man is the soul.
Now, he's gonna proceed, the Nefesh HaChayim, with trying to explain the mechanism, the structure of how this works.
How can man, in a lowly spiritual world, how can man serve as the catalyst, as the impetus, as the driving force behind all of created existence? So the first thing we have to know is that we tend to think of ourselves as a body.
Maybe we have a soul as well, but it's al- the soul is almost like a feature within our body.
But certainly we know that man is a hybrid, a fusion of opposites, and Scripture tells us, Psalms 139, "You formed me first and last, front and back." Is man, is man first or last, front or back, highest or lowest? The answer is both.
And what's the status of the soul? Is it first or last? Is it top or bottom? When it comes to the soul, man is all the way at the very top, above everything else in God's creation, above all the worlds, above all the dimensions, above all the realms.
And because the soul's at the top, we've seen this idea before, all of created existence, the upper spheres, the lower spheres, the myriads of levels, they are all interconnected.
